ISTE Standard: Learner (ISTE-E 2.1)

What ISTE-E 2.1 Means

ISTE-E 2.1: Learner focuses on continuous professional growth. Educators strengthen their practice by learning with and from others, exploring effective uses of technology, reflecting on their experiences, and staying current with research that can improve teaching and student learning (International Society for Technology in Education [ISTE], 2024).

Three Areas of the Learner Standard

2.1a — Set Professional Learning Goals
Educators establish professional learning goals, explore technology-supported approaches and emerging practices, and reflect on their effectiveness.

2.1b — Participate in Professional Learning Networks
Educators learn with and from colleagues through local and global professional learning communities, sharing ideas and exploring new approaches to teaching and technology.

2.1c — Stay Current with Research
Educators remain informed about research and evidence that can guide instructional decisions and improve student learning.

Reflection on Learning

As an educator, I believe learning is an ongoing process that requires curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to grow. ISTE-E 2.1: Learner reflects my commitment to continually strengthening my practice by exploring emerging technologies, engaging in professional learning, and considering how new knowledge can improve teaching and student learning (International Society for Technology in Education [ISTE], 2024). My graduate studies in educational technology have encouraged me to move beyond simply learning how a digital tool works and to think more critically about its instructional purpose and effectiveness.

In my role as a media specialist, I regularly explore new technologies and digital resources that can support students and teachers. I also learn through collaboration with colleagues, professional research, and reflection on my own practice. This commitment to continued learning is especially important in educational technology, where educators must continually research emerging technologies and develop their professional knowledge (Virginia Department of Education, 2023). As technology continues to evolve, particularly with the growth of artificial intelligence, I recognize the importance of remaining informed while carefully evaluating how new tools can be used responsibly and meaningfully.

My graduate studies have also encouraged me to reflect on how I respond to change. Viewing Who Moved My Cheese? reminded me that growth often requires moving beyond familiar routines and being willing to learn and adapt (Keyvan, 2012). I identified with Haw because change can initially create uncertainty, but I have learned that moving forward requires developing new skills and being open to new approaches. This lesson has influenced how I approach emerging technologies. Rather than adopting a tool simply because it is new, I want to understand its purpose, evaluate its effectiveness, and determine how it can meaningfully support teaching and learning.

Learn. Reflect. Grow

Professional Growth Roadmap

This video explains the professional growth areas I identified through my Technology Integration Self-Assessment and the goals represented in my infographic. I used Canva and Gemini/NotebookLM to develop the multimedia components, providing an opportunity to explore emerging digital tools while reflecting on how they can support my continued professional learning and practice.

My Technology Learning Journey

This artifact represents my growth as a learner throughout my graduate studies in educational technology. Exploring tools such as Canva, Gemini/NotebookLM, Loom, Soundtrap, EBSCOhost, World Book Online, and Follett Destiny has helped me become more intentional about how I evaluate and use technology. Each tool provided a different learning experience, from digital design and AI-assisted research to video production, audio creation, database research, and technology evaluation. Rather than selecting a tool simply because it is new or engaging, I now consider its instructional purpose, accessibility, reliability, usability, and potential impact on student learning. These experiences have reinforced the importance of continually exploring emerging technologies while reflecting on how they can meaningfully support my work as a school library media specialist.
